Antique of the Week: an Early 18th Century Bracket Clock by William Kipling

William Kipling is recorded as working in London between 1705 and 1737, when London’s clockmakers were at the height of their powers. This small, well-proportioned clock, standing 13.5 inches, is a wonderful example of this era. It dates to around 1720.
The compact, ebonised case has an inverted bell-top with a brass carrying handle. There are pierced wood frets to the front and rear doors.
The attractive brass dial has date and mock pendulum apertures with the maker’s signature across the top of the shallow arch. Four gilt brass foliate spandrels with central classical heads frame the dial. The movement, with verge escapement and pull quarter repeat on two bells, has a wonderful foliate engraved backplate bearing the maker’s signature with a cartouche.
