Queen Anne ebony bracket timepiece by Richard Rooker, London


A lovely smaller size Queen Anne ebony bracket timepiece.

The moulded ebony veneered case of classic proportions with dome caddy top and cast brass carrying handles. The sides are glazed to reveal the movement and the front door has a buried foliate brass escutcheon. The rectangular dial with wheatear engraved edging to the top and base, the matted centre charmingly engraved with scrolling flowers and central upright flower, with offset date at VIII.

The movement with beautifully engraved backplate, signed ‘Rich Rooker, London’. The verge escapement with pierced and engraved apron and pull quarter repeat mechanism on two bells.


*Richard Rooker is listed on page 469 of Brian Loomes’s The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain. Rooker is recorded as having been born circa 1671 and apprenticed to John Clowes from 1685 to 1692. Rooker took on a number of apprentices and is recorded as still working at Chelsea in 1748.
