Antique winged lantern clock by Thomas Wheeler, London

A rare Charles II period winged brass lantern clock by the well known maker, Thomas Wheeler, London. This fine clock has a patinated brass case with a dial which has a beautifully engraved centre and a central disc for setting the alarm mechanism.

The case has an engraved and signed front fret, engraved with intertwined dolphins and is surmounted by the brass bell and finial. This rare clock retains its original verge movement and central alarm disc.

Thomas Wheeler specialised in making lantern clocks of this 'winged' variety which is particularly attractive, showing the movement of the swinging pendulum against the background of both side doors.

Thomas Wheeler, London, was apprenticed to Nicholas Coxeter in 1647/8 and free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1655/6. He held a number of official positions within the Clockmakers' Company including Assistant in 1674, Warden from 1680 and Master in 1684. One of his apprentices, Samuel Townson, married his daughter Sarah at St James's Duke's Place in 1695. Many of his clocks are signed 'near ye French Church in London', which would suggest a workshop near Threadneedle Street. He is also sometimes listed as being situated in the parish of All Hallow's London Wall and also in Bishopsgate Street, both in close proximity to the 'french church'. Wheeler died between 1695 adn 1697 and his widow received a charitable payment from teh Clockmakers' Company in 1701.
