Antique William III period bracket clock by William Fuller, London

London

A fine William III period ebony case quarter repeating bracket clock by William Fuller, London. This fine clock in its ebony case has a basket top case mounted with a shaped brass carrying handle.

The seven inch square brass dial has a silvered chapter ring, with a matted brass centre, mock pendulum, date aperture and two ringed winding holes. The dial is signed Fuller London. In the corners are beautifully pierced spandrels with cherub masks. Above the XII is a leaver for strike/not strike.

The two train five pillar movement is pull quarter repeating on four bells. The back-plate is profusely engraved with elaborately scrolled cartouches and flowers, the centre with a scrolled panel written in flamboyant script, William Fuller London. The apron is finely engraved and pierced.

This bracket clock stands on a moulded base and is raised on brass bun feet.

William Fuller was a bound apprentice to Robert Silke, a gun-maker. He then transferred to Nathaniel Dike, then to John White. He was Free of the Clockmakers Company from 1675 to 1699. He took on an apprentice in September 1688 Joshua Wilson and July 1699 James Mesniel, who was the son of the clockmaker James Mesniel Senior of Tottenham, London. Fuller also bound an apprentice for Thomas Birch. Fuller paid no quarterage after 1692 and he received alms from the clockmakers charity from 1711 to 1713 when he probably died.
