Antique Georgian musical longcase clock by Richard Collis, Romford, Essex

An extremely fine mid 18th century figured mahogany musical longcase clock by Richard Collis, Romford.

The arch top silvered and brass dial with two subsidiary dials depicting strike/not strike and chime/not chime, with the engraved maker's signature between. Above are a selection of musical airs, such as 'My Lodging', 'Lovely Nymph', '104 Psalm' and four others. The silvered dial with pierced brass spandrels, and blued steel pierced hands, has a matted brass centre with a seconds dial and three ringed winding holes.

The hood has an attractive pagoda top with three brass finials with acanthus leaves, above a pierced air fret. The hood door is flanked by reeded columns with brass inlay and topped with corinthian capitals. The flame figured mahogany arched trunk door with satinwood banding and fan motifs is also flanked by reeded corinthian columns mirroring the ones above.

The base has a shaped plinth; an inlaid oval figured mahogany panel, fan motifs and small corinthian columns.

This fine clock has an 8 day movement and strikes the hours on a bell.

Note: There are five musical scores on this fine longcase clock. Two of them, 'My Lodging' and 'Britons strike home' were 17th century songs. My lodging was a country dance and folk song written by the baroque composer Matthew Locke. The patriotic Britons strike home was written by Henry Purcell in 1695. It was still popular in the first quarter of the 18th century when John Gay incorporated the song into his production of The Beggars Opera in 1728.

Richard Collis was apprenticed in 1768 and was recorded working until 1824.
