Antique ebonised bracket clock by William Allam, London

A fine 18th century ebonised striking bracket clock by William Allam, London of the rarer smaller size.

The well proportioned bell-top ebonised case is surmounted by a cast feathered handle and four cone finials. The moulding to the cornice and the plinth base is crisp and the front door has pierced engraved frets and a brass-lined glazed panel.

The 6 inch brass dial is signed by the maker and has an applied nameplate in the arch which is flanked by twin subsidiary dials for Strike/Silent and for slow/fast regulation. The silvered chapter ring has Roman numerals and Arabesque numbers. Within the matted dial centre there is a mock pendulum aperture and a date aperture above VI. The blued steel hands appear to be original.

The movement is secured to the case by a pair of L-shaped engraved brass brackets located in the uprights of the rear door. The movement itself has substantial plates united by five knopped pillars, with twin fusees driving a train of delicate arbors to a verge escapement rack striking on a bell. The backplate is signed in a central reserve which is enclosed by foliate scrolls. The lenticular pendulum bob is secured via a pin to the rise and fall regulation and passes through a single-footed pair of cheeks,

*William Allam was a well known maker who is recorded on page 11 of Loomes’ ‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World: Complete 21st Century Edition’. Allam worked from Bond St. London and was a brother of the Clockmakers Company between 1743 and 85.
