Antique Early 18th Century Lacquer Bracket Clock by Claude Viet, London

England

The exceptional moulded case is profusely decorated with very detailed chinoiserie scenes. These depict inhabited landscapes, floral gardens, hatched decoration and insects in flight, all set against an olive green faded background.
The 18cm square brass dial has a mock pendulum aperture, strike/silent and signed chapter-ring.
The exquisitely engraved backplate bears the maker’s signature and strikes the hours on a bell. In addition, the hours and quarter hours can be sounded on three further bells activated by pulling the side cord.

Literature

This Huguenot clockmaker was married in 1696 and it is recorded that his daughter Marianne was apprenticed to him in 1714/1715.
