Antique bracket clock by John Brown

A fine George II period ebony bracket clock. The moulded case has an inverted bell top with a brass carrying handle. The sides have elaborately pierced gilt brass sound frets depicting flowers and cherubs.

The brass dial has a silvered chapter ring with a mock pendulum, date aperture and a signature plate signed 'Jno Brown Edinburgh'. Above is a subsidiary dial showing strike/silent. Around the dials in the four corners are pierced rococo spandrels with face masks. The movement with verge escapement and a beautifully engraved back-plate, strikes the hours on a bell and is also quarter repeating.

John Brown, son of John Brown of Edinburgh, free in 1720, died in 1748-50. See: Brian Loomes 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World'
